George Rempe, Assistant Varsity Coach

SBHS Baseball Hall of Fame Coach, George Rempe, began coaching in the Santa Barbara Pony League in 1981. He coached two years in the Bronco Division and two more years in the Pony Division. In 1985, Coach Rempe took over the SBHS Freshman team for a year. In 1986, he assisted Bill Oliphant with the SBHS J.V. team. From 1987 to the present, Coach Rempe has been on the SBHS Varsity staff, with team offence, hitting and mental preparation being his main areas of emphasis.

Coach Rempe lettered in four sports at Brophy College Prep, a Jesuit high school in Phoenix, Arizona. Coach Rempe also received the Brophy “Outstanding Athlete Award” his senior year (1962). He received his Undergraduate Degree (1966) and his Law Degree (1969) from the University of Arizona. Coach Rempe was a Captain in the United States Army, Corps of Engineers, serving in Viet Nam in 1970-71. He was a partner in the Santa Barbara law firm of Hollister & Brace where he practiced law for 30 years.

Some of Coach Rempe's favorite moments include:

  • When the 2000 SBHS Dons Baseball team played for the CIF Championship in Dodger Stadium
  • When current Colorado Rockies centerfielder, Ryan Spilborghs, was asked by the press how he handled the pressure leading up to setting the UCSB Gaucho Baseball record for the most consecutive game hitting streak (which still stands), he responded by saying it wasn’t a problem for him because his high school hitting coach, George Rempe, taught him how to handle pressure when he played for the SBHS Dons.

Coach Rempe believes that high school baseball should be enjoyable but realizes that playing baseball is a challenging activity that forces players to deal with "failure". It is how the players learn to effectively deal with the challenges and setbacks they encounter while playing baseball that will help define them later as men.
